Riot Games has announced changes to its behaviour towards content creators who violate the rules. According to the company, people can now be penalised even if no violations occur during active play of a Riot game.

This decision, which will have a harsh impact on streamers around the world, will be implemented very soon. Creators who now play a Riot game may have to think twice. Here are the details

Riot’s change will take effect on 3 January 2025. Creators caught using profanity or offensive language will be banned, even if the violation does not occur during a League of Legends match, for example.

According to Riot Games, the goal is to eliminate toxicity in games and provide a safe environment for players. On the updated Terms of Service page, the company emphasises the possibility of banning players or restricting access to a Riot account.

Riot’s statement about this was as follows: ‘If you say or do things that violate our Terms of Service while streaming our games or creating content about our games, we may restrict access to your Riot accounts. If you are part of our affiliate programme, we may suspend your affiliate privileges.’

Riot Games said it’s up to them to monitor and penalise creators who violate the terms. For example, a streamer could be penalised for using offensive terms during a stream while a Riot game is being played in the background.
